After Fifty Blahs!

What are you doing? Are you pleased with how your life “turned out”? Sometimes it’s easy to get down on yourself and begin looking at “younger” people and you wonder where the time went! Even the policemen and women look like your son and daughter now. That’s when you realize that you are getting more mature. I didn’t say old. That’s in your head. If you think old, you will behave old. If you believe that every day is a new day and it is a chance to learn something new, you’ll be great from now on. It might take a few months, or maybe even a year or two, to embrace yourself and your new decade. You will be physically changing in this decade more than any other. What are some of the changes you feel? You might want to discuss them with your doctor. Some other things are wonderful and you are physically different now. There is no need to worry. It is normal to realize that every day is special. Young people don’t think that way. We know that each day is a gift, and our lives seem to be written in different scripts. Open every door and window. Let the air into your life. Experience everything. Smell the trees, air, dirt, even the comfortable pillow you hug every night at the end of the day. You’re alive and relish every minute. There is no reason to get the fifty blahs. Reach out to your family, friends and neighbors. Get out of your shell and you will beat the fifties blahs!

Volunteer, Today’s the Day!

Did you ever think of volunteering for a cause that you think is important? Community service may be teaching someone, helping to organize a project in your community, or helping out a friend? It’s hard when you are still working and coming home exhausted, but the rewards of community service to your spirit will amaze your new positive attitude. As we pass the wise age of 50, our children don’t need us as much and we start to think about being a valuable person in society as we “mature”..I won’t say “age”. If you give of your time, even once a week, you will meet new people and help a needy person or promote a new idea and it will refresh you. “No man (or woman) is an island.” Who said that? If you are an island, you will be marooned there, and you will be very lonely after you retire. Volunteering now, might help you decide what you’d like to do after you retire. You could follow that dream of yours to own or manage a favorite business. If you volunteer in that business, you can learn if it could be for your when you retire, and maybe might want to work part time. The owner might even offer you a paying job when the time comes and you can say “Yes!” Volunteering helps the community and it will help you. Today’s the day to think about where you can make a difference in your life and in others’.

Cracking Bones?

Lately, I’ve noticed that my back bones crack when I move in any position. There is no pain. Is it because I’m over 50? It is frigid outside and without exercise, the muscles get soft and do not support the skeleton. I have not been whitewater kayaking since October and have not put exercise as a New Year’s resolution. Maybe, I better. Maybe more glucosomine is in order. If you have any ideas, let me know! I think, I better bundle up and get out and snow shoe!

I See You…The Theme From Avatar

There were fewer movies this year that made a positive impact on viewers. Yes, there was mindless humor, drama, senseless violence, and sexual improprieties that was forced upon families. You had the choice of removing yourself with your grandchildren, or staying in the theater and covering your grandchild’s eyes during the “adult” scenes, but Avatar was one movie that kept you all wide eyed and intrigued, and had many positive messages.
I will focus on only a few quotes from Avatar for new thoughts for 2011. You can interpret them in other ways. I became very introspective with these quotes and formulated these thoughts from Avatar for 2011.
These quotes are from the actors, the movie, and writer/director James Cameron.

1. Actor Sam Worthington…Character, Jake Sully…”They sent us a message. They can take anything they want, but we’ll send them our message, ‘This is our land!’ “
Appreciate our American freedom this year!
2. Actor Sigourney Weaver…Character, Grace…”Pandora…a world of wonder and mystery”.
Be open to learning about the wonder and mystery of nature, and the world around us.
3. Actor Stephen Lang…Character, Colonel Miles Quarich…”Did you forget what team you are playing for?”
Be open to change. Sometimes change will impact whole lives and civilizations!
4. “Making the bond.” A term used in the movie, powerfully showing true soul bonding.
Connect with others and seal your friendships.
5 Actor Zoe Saldana…Character, Neytiri, says to Jake, ” You have a strong heart…no fear.”
Don’t be afraid to try new things or experience new adventures.
Someday you will regret that choice.
6. An actor inside the lab, “Agent Sully, You can make a fresh start in a new world. You can make a difference.”
Find new places in your heart that used to be closed to others. You can make a difference.
7. Character Jake Sully, “All I every wanted was a single thing worth fighting for.”
Make this year, the year you fight for what you believe.
Take the challenge, and do what you can.
8. Character Colonel Miles…”Those savages are threatening our whole operation.”
Respect, and support organizations that help indigenous people and forests. Natural resources and their homes are being stripped away for monetary gain and greed.
9. Character Jake Sully, “The strong prey on the weak. Nobody does a thing.”
Stand up! Defend and support the downtrodden in society… the poor, the sick and hungry.
10. Characters Jake and Neytiri…stare into each other’s eyes and say, ” I see you!”
Real love means you “see” the inner person, the soul and understand the needs of that person. When you “see” them, you really do love them. When you say, ” I love you”, what do you mean? Love is an abstract word. What is love? It means something different to each of us. Sometime when you “see” the other person, it is time to make a choice. Only you can make that choice.

This New Year’s thought to say ” I see you” means you care, understand their spirit and needs, thereby truly loving. Some people say “I see you” when they want the other person to know that they understand what they are saying. Say it to those you love, or to another to say you truly understand.
” I see you” is my favorite expression from Avatar. That says it all!
You make your own resolutions from Avatar. Happy New Year 2011!

Audio Story Books- It’s Like Being There

Loved the book from the Hallmark store for my grandchildren! My husband and I recorded our own voices reading the story about Christmas. Our grandsons could listen to us from one hundred miles away. They could follow along and point to the words as we read them. This is wonderful. Reading teachers record their student reading, and often model what good reading sounds like. This is what you can do. Buy one of the self record books and record it for your child. He or she can open the book and hear what good reading sounds like, will learn new words, and also love hearing your voice at bedtime or anytime they miss you!

Bones ache?

Maybe your knees ache when you walk long distances. You just got home from work and you have to eat, make a few calls, email your kids in college, and do a myriad of things. Next time you shop, pick up some glucosamine, calcium and vitamin D with your normal vitamins. With winter cold restraining our outside walking activity, we get less sunshine and natural vitamin D, so supplements are important.  Just these few things will make your aching bones feel better.
